K is for Kindergarten, F is for Fun!: Our Thursday

We had a great day. Mrs. Kehoe came to see us in the morning to work on more MindUp activities. Today she talked about mindfulness and gave them opportunities to practice mindful smelling and eating. I've added some pictures in the April folder.

We learned about the letter Pp this week. Today they made a peacock craft. I have a father in law who raises peacocks so I shared some feathers with the kids. We also played in the playground this afternoon instead of staying in the gym.

On Tuesday morning we will head to Dairy Queen at 9am. I double checked it, yes it is 9am. If you want to join us, we will leave here at about 8:50.

If your child is filling their "rhyme" show and share bag, please help him/her with a rhyming word for the clue. If your child hasn't brought home a brown bag yet, he/she will. We are sending it home the day before it's his/her turn.

Ask Questions BEFORE Reading:

Talk about the picture on the cover and the title of the book

Ask: "What do you think the book will be about?"
Ask: "What do you think will happen to ____?" (refer to a person on the cover)

Ask Questions DURING Reading:

Talk about the pictures in the book and what has happened so far

Ask: "Why does the boy look sad/happy/excited?"
Ask: "What is that person looking for?"
Ask: "Where is that person going?"

Ask Questions AFTER Reading:

Talk about the book as a whole- What happened? What part did you like the most/the least?

Have your child retell what happened in their own words
Ask: "Did you like it or not? Why did/didn't you like it?"
Ask: "Who else might like it?"

Predict:

Talk about what you think might happen

Ask: "What will happen next?
Say: "I think he will win"
Say: "I think that they are going to get lost"

Make Connections:

Talk about the book and relate it to your own life

Ask: "Does ___ remind you of something/someone?"
Say: "That cat reminds me of your friend's cat"
Say: "This boy looks like your brother!"
Say: "This reminds me of a dinner at our house!"

Visualize:

Talk about how something might look, sound, or feel. Close your eyes and imagine it!

Say: "Close your eyes and picture it in your head"
Say: "Think about it. Can you see all those beautiful colours?"
Say: "Think about how fuzzy and warm that blanket is!"
Say: "Imagine how loud Clifford's bark is! Close your eyes and imagine it - do you hear it?"
